My Adventure Stint At Switzerland

My experience with Switzerland’s adventure sports might not be much, but it doesn’t mean that I didn’t have the time of my life with the little that I did do!

“We’re here!” my middle-aged hare brained mother screamed as soon as we ‘touched down’ at Switzerland through our bumbling SOTC tour bus. We were at Gstaad, and we were going to have our first real one-on-one exposure to snow. And that too, in summer! The four of us boarded a cable car at Col du Pillon and excitedly took pictures on the way. I had a special attachment to the cows; they were so cute and furry. My mother, eager for her first experience with snow, just looked up towards the peaks, along with my brother who was also the official family photographer.

Once we reached up, we saw pristine white all around us. Sheer white snow capped mountains and all its brilliance. It was breath-taking. Before we got to exploring, we were starving so we indulged in a scrumptious lunch in the healthy mountain air. (Sounds like an Enid Blyton book doesn’t it?) We were surrounded by panoramic views of huge alpine wonders like Jungfrau and Mont Blanc. Post lunch, we then went upstairs to a terrace-like area which was just awe-inspiring. On all sides, there was a board and telescope telling us which peaks belonged to which mountain. Most of us were too numb with cold to check out every peak, so once we were done observing some of them we hurried in for warmth. I noticed a small line of people leading somewhere. My dad observed the same and asked the tour guide who informed him that it was a bobsleigh track. “Let’s go!” I squealed, eager for my first tobogganing experience. My brother refused to come with me, so I dragged one of my friends into coming with me. “I think this is a bad idea Aneesha,” whimpered Monica. “Aw come on, how bad could it be,” I mentioned defensively I held on tight. “And we were off!

The whiteness around me overlapped and I couldn’t see anything! The breeze ruffled through my hair, and I saw a brief moment of Monica’s hot pink muffler being left behind along the way. “Wow!” I said, grinning from ear to ear as we dusted the snow off ourselves. “That was great!” I’d never felt so much adrenaline in a long time! “Are you crazy?” mouthed Monica as we trudged back up through the ski-escalator. We were later informed that we just went on the Alpine Coaster, the worlds highest bobsleigh track. Whoa!

As we got back to the car, the tour guide informs us that there are a few more adventures to experience in Switzerland at a place called Interlaken. “Nothing can beat that crazy toboggan ride!” I said.

I was wrong. Interlaken was much more than I expected. After all of us were hauled out of our beds at 7 in the morning, we were disgruntled at waking so early. But the sight of the high and mighty Mt. Titlis struck me with an indescribable awe. We got into the worlds first rotating cable-car (called Rotair). It gave us a 360 degree view of the mountainous splendour. Once we got there, we drank some warm cocoa and went exploring into the ice caves which were nothing short of stunning with its amazing ice-sculptures. We then took a ski-lift ride. (None of us knew how to ski, but we did enjoy the ride!) Budding skiers can definitely conquer the slopes. Try heli-skiing, where you are dropped off a helicopter and plunged into snow with your skis!

Interlaken is a haven for daredevil adventure-seeking enthusiasts. There are places to sky-dive at Interlaken as well! Click here for more details.

However, the experience that topped everything for me was Zorbing at Interlaken. Zorbing is a concept where you are put in a transparent white ball and hurtled down the mountain side! It was the most surreal experience, and pretty safe too!

So if you are an adventure seeker like I am, and are a fan of snow, then Switzerland is the place to be on your holiday!
