Fiji Islands, South Pacific

The ‘Soft Coral Capital of the World’, the home of the ‘Great White Wall’, the ‘Yellow Tunnel’ and most importantly great aquatic wonders is the ‘Fiji islands’. The waters here appear in the monochromatic shades of blue and most beautifully sway you through a mermaid’s realm all the year round. Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Even if you go to space you can see ‘The Great Barrier Reef’ as it’s known to be the largest coral reef in the world! If you are a professional scuba diver or an amateur, this place will make you happy with its myriad wondrous spots. ‘The Heron Island’ is a beautiful coral island here that offers excellent scuba diving at a stone’s throw away from the shore. The waters take you through heavenly overtures and melodious waves that resonate as you go deeper. If you are the quiet scuba diver then this serene place is very ideal for you. Australia can also say it with great pride that every inch of its 1,250-mile-long Barrier Reef is the best destination for snorkelers. It’s East has Vanuatu that is circled and ticked by many scuba divers for its extraordinary mélange. Amid clear warm waters and abundant marine life scuba divers can experience caves, swim-throughs, walls, lava towers, fantastically elaborate wrecks, coral mazes, grottoes, overhangs and more. You can also just strap up a snorkel and stay under 20 feet for hours on a scuba tank to be on the ‘cloud nine’ underwater.

Belize

Every time you visit this place you know there will be something new the next time you come here. Touting of the globe’s best preserved marine ecosystems this unexplored place is on the top list of all scuba divers. And why wouldn’t it be when the ‘The Blue Hole’ in Belize has been declared by Jacques Cousteau as one of the top ten scuba diving sites in the world. Witness vibrant shades of coloured species weaved in the royal blues. Be it the azure vase sponges or the Gangs of blue tangs or the clusters of colourful fishes or the vibrant reef sharks, reef fish, bull sharks and hammerheads. They all instantly add colour to the life of every visitor. The best thing about this place is that the diving and snorkelling lovers can also visit the Glover’s Reef Atoll, a UNESCO World Heritage Site 56 kilometres from Belize.

Hawaii

Hawaii is Hawaii and everyone knows it’s one of the best! Every island in Hawaii has its only trait and although beautifully placed together it shows you around in a different way. But that’s not the only reason divers come here all year round. It’s also because of its warm comfortable waters and the welcoming marine life that don’t mind to be around the year with you. The giant sea turtles, enormous stingrays, sharks and whales are easily seen here as they live in the Hawaii fertile volcanic ecosystem. For the snorkelers, if there is a perfect example of the world’s best snorkelling site then Oahu’s ‘Hanauma Bay’ would be it. This ancient volcanic caldera keeps the snorkelers safe from the Pacific-borne and at the same time showcases the gripping and unsurpassed aquatic life ever. Just take little food with you and you will be engulfed by millet-seed, raccoon, threadfin, pyramid and ornate butterflyfish. Camouflage has not been a priority, so most species look like they’ve rolled around in a box of Crayolas.  Another visitor’s attraction here is the ‘Makaha Beach Park’.

Cozumel and Riviera Maya, Mexico

A lazy diver’s paradise, Cozumel boasts of picturesque views and schools of fish. Cancun’s new Underwater Sculpture Museum gives you such an extraordinary experience that you wished you lived there forever! The 19 popular scuba diving reef areas, a labyrinth of  swim-throughs, canyons amidst the towering coral plateaus, freshwater caves and the striking marine life gives the divers and the snorkellers the ‘perfect day’. Also an A-lister for the snorkelers, Cozumel offers many accessible sites like the ‘Palancar’. Its 5 sections include the Shallows and Garden, a 40-foot Convair airplane (sunk in shallow water for a film shoot in the ’70s) and Dzul-Ha, an ordinary strip of beach with terrific coral formations just offshore.

Although these are the best five destinations in the world, there are others that cannot be missed if one is talking about the best of scuba diving and snorkelling.
