A Surfers’ Haven

The Bahamas are known to be the legendary surf mecca with millions of surfers coming in every year to get the ultimate adrenaline high, surfing on the some of the most consistent and powerful surfs. The Bahamas can see very large, powerful surfs, even by the Hawaiian standards. Most of the Bahamas surfing spots are located on the Out Islands of Abaco, Eleuthera and Cat Island.

The island of Eleuthera is one of the hot spots for this sport. It is surrounded by the deep Atlantic Ocean on the North and East, where the best breaks are located. A 3000-foot drop in the ocean floor is like a swell magnet that can channel in swells from as far away as Africa and the Azores.

Surfers Beach is the most popular surfers’ beach in the Bahamas. Located close to Gregory Town, this surf break was discovered in the early 1950s, by Dudly Whittman the first surfer to explore the Bahamas Islands looking for the correct waves. Surfers Beach is a big left break and has swells peeping out from the blue ocean and breaking on a deep-water reef.

Holiday Beach located on the Atlantic side of Gregory Town, has a rugged, rocky shoreline with only a small beach. The rock cliff point directly off the beach can hold a 20 plus wave without closing out.

Hidden Beach is situated about 15 miles to the south of Gregory Town in a settlement called Rainbow Bay. Also called Big Rock, this beach has waves reeling right breaking off a point. The break is relatively close to the shore. It breaks over a shallow reef.

James Point has some of the best wave on the island. Located about 30 miles south of Gregory Town, this surf was discovered in 1972.

Great Abaco has some exciting surfing spots ideal for all surf lovers. Garbanzo in Great Abaco is an exposed reef break that has consistent surf. The best time to visit it is in the winters as it rarely gets crowded here. However, beware of rocks, sharks and fire corals.

Indicas also located in the Indicas that works only once in a while, tends to get a mix of groundswells and windswells but the best swell angle is from the northeast. The best time to explore surfing here is in the winters.

Willawahs, also situated in Great Abaco, is an exposed point break that has inconsistent surf. It works the best in offshore winds from the southwest. It gets a mix of groundswells and windswells with the best swell direction from the northeast.

The best season to enjoy surfing in the Bahamas is October through April. There is never any shortage of adventure while surfing in the Bahamas. All you need to do is to pack your own board and get set to experience you’re once in a lifetime Bahamian holiday!
